More about WCTO
The Chinese traditional music is a unique cultural heritage from China. WCTO was founded by four musicians in 1999 to perform Chinese traditional music. Since then we have grown into one of the most influential music organizations in the greater DC metro area. The Emeritus Director is James Xu, the current director is Xuezhang Hou, the composer and conductor is Duke Tang, the artistic adviser is Ying Liu, and the artistic directors are Xichun Sun and Huilan Chen.
WCTO tries to improve its members’ skills by practicing every Thursday at 7:30 PM at the Nova Art Center. We have grown from just a few musicians to a full fledged orchestra with dozens of members, and our repertoire has grown to include not only solos and small ensembles, but also traditional Chinese symphonies with a wide array of wind and string instruments. We play both traditional and original music. In addition to performing by ourselves, we have also played with various choruses and dancers. Our influence has been extending from the Chinese communities to the mainstream circles. We have performed together with famous artists such as Muchun Guan, Shuzhen Guo, Xiaohui Ma, and Yanyan Kong.
We have a lot of performances each year at the museums, government agencies, research institutes, colleges, high schools, elementary schools, churches, libraries, folk festivals, retirement centers, and consulates in DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. We have showcased the traditional Chinese culture to a wide audience, and received very warm feedback.
